Lewis face pot - Kevin Francis circa 2006

Lewis the Tortoise face pot produced by Kevin Francis Ceramics of Stoke-on-Trent, England, circa 2006. Tortoises are reptiles of the family Testudinidae. Like other turtles, tortoises have a shell to protect from predation and other threats. The shell in tortoises is generally hard and they retract their necks and heads directly backward into the shell to protect themselves. Tortoises can vary in size ranging from a few inches in length to four feet. Lewis' face pot quote, "They called him tortoise because he taught us", is a quote from "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" when the Mock Turtle is explaining about his old teacher.
