Lewis Carroll character jug modeled by David B. Biggs and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, as the 1998 Character Jug of the Year. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898) was a lecturer in mathematics at Oxford University and a pioneer of photography. However, he is most remembered under his pseudonym, Lewis Carroll, as the creator of Alice in Wonderland. Dodgson wrote the popular and fanciful stories for Alice Liddell, daughter of Dean Liddell, who was head of Dodgson's college, Christ Church. Dodgson wrote "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" in 1865 and the sequel, "Through the Looking Glass", in 1872. He was a shy bachelor with a stammer, yet his imaginative stories have a keen sense of fun and observation, and are universally popular with young and old alike. The stories are full of references to life at Oxford. The White Rabbit and a clock form the handle of the jug.
