Lauren Bacall character jug prototype designed by Eric Griffiths and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in 1989 commissioned by UK International Ceramics for a proposed Great Film Stars Collection. Lauren Bacall (1924-2014) was an American film and stage actress, known for her husky voice and sultry looks. Born Betty Joan Perske in New York City to Jewish immigrants, she took her mother's maiden name Bacall when her parents divorced. As a young woman, Bacall took lessons at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. As Betty Bacall, she made her acting debut at age seventeen on Broadway in 1942. Howard Hawks brought her to Hollywood in 1944, changed her name to Lauren, and cast her in her first film, To Have and to Have Not, opposite Humphrey Bogart. A year later the twenty year old Bacall married the forty-five year old Bogart, staying married until his death in 1957. Bacall emerged as a leading lady in the film noir genre in films such as The Big Sleep (1946), Dark Passage (1947), and Key Largo (1948). She later evolved into a comedian in How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) and Designing Woman (1957). Bacall also worked in Broadway musicals, gaining Tony Awards for Applause (1970) and Woman of the Year (1981). Her performance in the movie The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996) earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination. In 1999, Bacall was ranked as one of the twenty-five most significant actresses in history by the American Film Institution. In 2009, she was selected to receive an Honorary Academy Award at the inaugural Governors Awards. A "The Big Sleep" filmstrip forms the handle of the jug.
