King and Queen of Diamonds toby jug - Royal Doulton 1994

King and Queen of Clubs two-sided toby jug designed by Stanley J. Taylor and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1994 limited edition of 2,500. France gave us the suits of spades, clubs, diamonds and hearts, and the use of simple shapes and flat colors helped facilitate manufacture. The French also created fascinating identities for the Kings and Queens of each suit, along with special designations for the other court cards. The French were instrumental in bringing the pleasures of card play to people in Europe and the New World. French cards soon flooded the market and were broadly exported. They became the standard in England first, and then in the British Colonies of America. The King of Diamonds was originally Julius Caesar, and the Queen of Diamonds was the biblical character, Rachel. The first two-sided toby jug produced by Doulton, the King and Queen of Diamonds is a delightful interpretation of the traditional playing card images.
