John Hays toby jug produced by Grace Apgar, the founder of the Big Brook Studio Pottery of Marlboro, New Jersey, circa 1965. William John Hays (1750 - 1789) was a Revolutionary War hero of Valley Forge and the Battle of Monmouth. Hays enlisted in December of 1775 as a gunner in Proctor's Artillery. Two years later he re-enlisted in the infantry and served under General William Irvin at the Battle of Monmouth. Hays was wounded on June 28, 1778, ending his military career. Hay's wife was Molly "Pitcher" Hays who made a name for herself serving alongside her husband at the Battle of Monmouth.
