Jock character jug - Crown Clarence circa 1960

Jock character jug produced by the Co-operative Wholesale Society Longton, England, under its Crown Clarence tradename circa 1960. Jock is a Scottish diminutive form of the name John. It is also a nickname for someone of Scottish origin, as well as being the collective name for Scottish soldiers, collectively known as "the Jocks". It corresponds to Jack in England and Wales. In London the rhyming slang "sweaty" is used as an offensive name for Scots deriving from "Sweaty sock - Jock". A shillelagh forms the handle of the jug. The Jock character jug was produced from Westminster Pottery molds.
