Jenny Jones toby jug - England circa 1980

Jenny Jones toby jug produced in England circa 1980. Jenny Jones was the subject of a famous English ballad Jenny Jones, known as the Welsh knitter, which was very popular between 1836 and about 1860. The song tells of the love that Edward Morgan, a sailor, had for Jenny Jones and how he had travelled the world and had seen many famous people, but wished to return to Llangollen and make Jenny Jones his wife. Author and comedic actor Charles Mathews claimed that he based the ballad on the story of Jenny Jones, a milkmaid, and David Morgan, a ploughman, both of whom worked at a farm at Pontblyddyn near Mold where he was staying for a while.
