Jefferson Hope character jug tiny - Royal Doulton 1995

Jefferson Hope tiny character jug modeled by William K. Harper and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1995 limited edition of 2,500 for Lawleys By Post. Jefferson Hope is the murderer in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "A Study in Scarlet" (1887). An American hunter and mining prospector in the Nevada-Utah territory in the 1840s, Hope murdered Drebber and Stangerson, each the son of ego-driven and power-hungry Elders in the brand new polygamous Mormon community established in Salt Lake City. In spite of their many wives, the duo cast their eyes upon the fair Lucy Ferrier who, with her father, had been rescued and taken into the Mormon community. In a frustrated attempt to escape, Lucy's father was killed and the broken-hearted Lucy died soon thereafter. The grieving Jefferson made a vow to avenge their deaths. Twenty years later, having pursued his nemeses across the world from Utah to London, his mission was accomplished. However, Sherlock Holmes solves the case and arrests Hope. Justice is ultimately satisfied, however, for instead of the wronged Jefferson having to go to prison for his crime, he dies of heart failure, perhaps from a broken heart. The handle of the jug is a silver dagger and bottle of poison.
