Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester character jug modeled by William K. Harper and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1998 limited edition of 1,500 commissioned by Lawleys By Post. Charlotte Brontë’s "Jane Eyre" (1847) has enjoyed huge popularity due to the novel’s exceptional emotional power. Jane is an orphan who is raised at first by her cruel aunt before being sent to Lowood School where she spends six years as a student and two years as a teacher. Yearning for new experiences, Jane accepts a governess position at a manor called Thornfield where her employer is the dark Mr. Rochester, with whom Jane falls secretly in love. In time, Rochester proposes to Jane and the wedding day arrives, wherein it is disclosed that Rochester already has a wife, Bertha, who is deranged. Fleeing penniless and hungry, Jane is forced to sleep outside and beg for food until she is taken in by the Riverses, who are cousins and inform her that she has inherited a large sum of money. Eventually returning to Thornfield she finds it burned to the ground and Bertha dead. In the fire, Rochester lost his eyesight and one of his hands. Rochester and Jane rebuild their relationship. They soon marry, and Rochester regains sight in one eye in time to behold the birth of their first son. A book, roses and paint brushes are on the Jane Eyre handle. A musical score and riding crop are on the Mr. Rochester handle.
