Indian Squaw character jug produced circa 1975. Native Americans, also known as American Indians, are the Indigenous peoples of the mainland United States. There are 574 federally recognized tribes living within the US. European colonization of the Americas resulted in a precipitous decline in Native American population because of new diseases, wars, ethnic cleansing, and enslavement. The United States, as part of its policy of settler colonialism, waged war against many Native American peoples, removing them from their ancestral lands, and subjecting them to one-sided treaties and to discriminatory government policies. An elder among the tribe, this Indian Squaw is a shaman and healer, providing physical, spiritual and emotional aide to all members of the tribe. A feather from her headband forms the handle of the jug.
