Henry V bookend designed by David B. Biggs and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, circa 2000. A famous speech from Shakespeare's "Henry V" is given by the King to rouse his men before the Battle of Agincourt where the English defeated the French against such odds that it has become one of the most notable victories in history. The French underestimated this shrewd king, as he was renowned as Prince Hal, a youthful merrymaker, who spends his time making mischief and roistering with Falstaff and his fellows in taverns. However, following the death of his father in "Henry IV Part II", Henry (1387-1422) renounces his wild companions and accepts his responsibilities as king, becoming a respected leader of his people. Henry's courtship of the French princess Catherine provides the romantic element of this patriotic play. After marrying Catherine to cement the relationship of the two countries, he becomes heir to the throne of France.
