Henry Cooper character jug modeled by Stanley J. Taylor and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1996 limited edition of 9,500 commissioned by Lawleys By Post. Henry Cooper (1934- ) was Britain's most accomplished heavyweight boxer, winning the British, European and Commonwealth titles outright during his career. He won the British heavyweight title in 1959 and held it until 1971. During his reign as champ he won three Lonsdale belts in defense of his title, a unique achievement in the history of boxing. He has been named throughout Europe as Britain's Most Popular Sporting Personality. However, what Cooper is most well-known for is his left hook which knocked a young Cassius Clay to the mat at Wembley Stadium in 1963 during a World Championship bout. This made Cooper the first opponent to knock down the World champion. Unfortunately for Cooper, Clay, who later became Muhammad Ali, recovered and defeated Cooper, retaining the title. The Lonsdale belt and boxing gloves form the handle of this jug.
