Grand yellow character jug - Stangl Pottery circa 1965

Grand character jug in a yellow colorway designed by Tony Sarg and produced by Stangl Pottery of Flemington, New Jersey, circa 1965. Grand is the Grand Poobah, or leader, of his local masonic temple. The origin of the term Grand Poobah comes from March 1885, from two masonic brothers, Gilbert and Sullivan, in their comedic opera The Mikado. In the opera one of the character's name is Pooh-Bah and he holds a variety of titles that he assumes from other people, including that of Lord Mayor and Commander in Chief. Grand is wearing the masonic fez hat of his office. Known to Stangl collectors as stoby jugs (Stangl toby jugs), full colorways were original production in the 1930s to 1950s. Solid colorways were produced in the 1960s and 1970s.
