The origins of the game of golf are typically associated with Scotland where golf has been played for over five hundred years and is the national game. The Oxford English Dictionary describes golf as the game "in which small hard balls are struck with clubs having wooden or metal heads into a series of holes on smooth greens at varying distances apart and separated by fairways, rough ground, hazards, etc., the object to hole the ball in the fewest possible strokes." The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland, (founded in 1754), is the international shrine of golf, and the Club's base rules are the worldwide standard for the game. Golf has spread throughout the world and has become one of the most popular pastimes, growing into a professional sport with a large following and offering large purses.
