Girl Punk toby jug version 1 produced by Maria Alvarez Echenique of London, England, in 2019 as a unique piece of artwork in The Subcultures of Hackney Series. This Girl Punk toby jug has a dyed punk green Mohican hair style. Her clothes, décor, makeup piercings and boots mark her out as a hardcore punk rocker. References to some of her favorite bands adorn her leather jacket and t-shirt: Kas Product (band name, front of leather), Poison Girls (black crow on red t-shirt), and Silverfish (“Hips Tits Lips Power” slogan on back of leather). These particular choices highlight how the punk movement was at the forefront of including and empowering women, as do the maker’s selection of transfers of significant women-related punk record covers that decorate the base that the punk sits on. Hackney is a vibrant multicultural part of inner London, and punk women have played a colorful and active part of the social life of Hackney. Though slightly less common these days, “punk’s picnics” still take place in parks, noisy gigs in pubs and small venues, and sometimes underground squat parties are put on with punk bands as a part of them.
