George III/George Washington double-sided character jug modeled by Michael Abberley and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1986 limited edition of 9,500. The American Revolutionary War made antagonists of Britain's king, George III, and the commander-in-chief of the American army, George Washington. The conflict was sparked by the British levy of high taxes on the colonies to pay for their security. Opposed to the measure, the Colonials began to band together and the British responded by increasing their military presence. Fighting broke out in 1775 and the remarkable strategist, George Washington, in command of a half-trained and poorly equipped army, forced the British evacuation of Boston. The Colonials declared independence from England on July 4, 1776, but George III's determination not to grant concessions to the rebels prolonged the struggle. After some setbacks, Washington inflicted significant defeats on the British at Trenton and Princeton in 1777. The surrender of the English commander, Cornwallis, at Yorktown in 1781 virtually ended the war. The Treaty of Paris was signed with Great Britain in 1783. The handle on George III's side is a cannon, while on George Washington's side is the Declaration of Independence.
