General Eisenhower character jug modeled by William K. Harper and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1993 special edition of 1,000 commissioned by UK International Ceramics. Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) was a U.S. general and military leader who became a popular two-term President. Born in Texas, he graduated from West Point in 1915. During World War II Eisenhower had a meteoric rise through the ranks to become Allied Military Commander. Upon successfully directing the invasions of Sicily and Italy, he was named Supreme Commander of the Allied European Expeditionary Force, responsible for the integration of land, sea and air forces in the successful invasion of France on D-Day, June, 1944. After World War II he became President of Columbia University, then took leave to assume supreme command over the new NATO forces in 1951. Persuaded to run for President in 1952, he waged a successful campaign under the banner “I Like Ike,” and was re-elected in 1956. His presidency was marked by the end of the Korean War, the halt of Communist expansion in Southeast Asia, desegregation of public schools and Federal facilities and the establishment of the Interstate highway system. In his farewell address he warned against the influence of the growing “military-industrial complex.” SHAEF, a shield and the U.S. flag on a tin helmet form the handle of the jug. SHAEF on the handle of the jug stands for “Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces.” Several colorways are known with handle variations.
