Gaffer character jug produced by Shaw and Copestake of Longton, England, circa 1965 using its SylvaC tradename. A gaffer is a boss, supervisor, or manager. For example, a foreman or overseer in charge of a group of physical laborers at a factory. A cane forms the handle of the jug.
