Franklin D. Roosevelt character jug designed by Caroline Dadd and modeled by Stanley J. Taylor, and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, as a 2008 limited edition of 100 commissioned by UK International Ceramics 30th anniversary. Assuming the Presidency in the depth of the Great Depression, Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882—1945), helped the American people regain faith in themselves. Born at Hyde Park, New York, he attended Harvard University and Columbia Law School. Following the example of his fifth cousin, President Theodore Roosevelt, a Republican, FDR entered politics, but as a Democrat. In 1928 Roosevelt became Governor of New York. He subsequently was elected President of the United States in November 1932, to the first of four consecutive terms, the most of any U.S. President. In his first one-hundred days as President, he proposed, and Congress enacted, a sweeping program to shore up the banking system, bring recovery to business and agriculture, relief to the unemployed and to those in danger of losing farms and homes. By 1935 the Nation had achieved some measure of recovery. He strove to keep the United States out of the war in Europe, yet at the same time to strengthen other nations threatened or attacked. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Roosevelt organized the country's manpower and resources for global war. His close friendship and cooperation with Winston Churchill helped turn the tide of World War II in Europe. Struck with polio in his forties and crippled for life, Roosevelt experienced deteriorating health as the war drew to a close. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage on April 12, 1945. An NBC microphone, United Nations flag, and election badge form the handle of the jug. A colorway with silver highlights is also known.
