Flower Seller character jug produced by Mason's of Hanley, England, circa 1985. A flower seller, normally a woman, traditionally sells flowers on the street. Often the flowers are carried in a basket. Quite common in Victorian London, the profession has slowly died out. The subject matter has been a favorite of artists. She is carrying a basket of freshly cut flowers in her right arm. Very common in Victorian London, street vendors sold merchandise or services that were easily transported; the term is synonymous with costermonger or peddler. Street vendors often advertised by loud street cries or chants, and bantered with customers, to attract attention and enhance sales. A blue ribbon forms the handle of this jug.
