Fish Widecombe toby jug - Devonway Pottery circa 1970

Fish toby jug produced by Devonway Pottery of Kingsbridge, Devon, England, circa 1970. This fish has jumped clear of the pond with its mouth open wide, trying to catch some low flying insects for tonight's dinner. His tail forms the handle of the jug. This version was produced for the Widecombe Fair, an annual fair in England held in the Dartmoor village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor on the second Tuesday of September. The location is well known as the subject of the folk song of the same name, featuring Uncle Tom Cobley and his friends.
