Falstaff salt glazed stoneware toby jug produced in England circa 1865. Sir John Falstaff appears in three plays by William Shakespeare. Falstaff is featured as the buffoonish suitor of two married women in The Merry Wives of Windsor and companion to Prince Hal. A fat and boastful knight he spends most of his time drinking at the Boar's Head Inn with petty criminals living on stolen or borrowed money. This Falstaff toby jug is seated in a wicker or rattan chair and wearing a hat, vest, jacket and pants fitting with his character. He is holding a mug of ale in his right hand. His left arm is reaching out and holding a walking stick, forming the handle of the jug.
