Falstaff toby jug majolica - Edward Steele circa 1880

Falstaff majolica toby jug produced by Edward Steele circa 1880. Sir John Falstaff appears in three plays by William Shakespeare. Falstaff is featured as the buffoonish suitor of two married women in The Merry Wives of Windsor and companion to Prince Hal. A fat and boastful knight he spends most of his time drinking at the Boar's Head Inn with petty criminals living on stolen or borrowed money. This Falstaff toby jug is seated in a wicker or rattan chair and wearing a blue hat blue vest maroon jacket and maroon pants. He is holding a mug of ale in his right hand. This is a rare jug.
