Dwarf toby jug - Goebel circa 1975

Dwarf toby jug produced by W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik of Bavaria, Germany, circa 1975. A dwarf is a type of supernatural being in Germanic folklore. Accounts of dwarfs vary significantly throughout history; however, they are commonly, but not exclusively, presented as living in mountains or stones and being skilled craftspeople. In early literary sources, only males are explicitly referred to as dwarfs. However, they are described as having sisters and daughters, while male and female dwarfs feature in later saga literature and folklore. Dwarfs continue to be featured in modern popular culture, such as in the works of J. R. R. Tolkien and Terry Pratchett. This dwarf is carrying his trusty pickaxe in his left hand as he heads toward the mine for a day's work. The tail of the dwarf's hat forms the handle of the jug.
