Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde double-sided toby jug designed by Stanley J. Taylor and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in 1996 - 1998. The two personalities of a single scientist, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are characters from the imagination of Robert Louis Stevenson in his 1886 The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Dr. Henry Jekyll is a prominent well-respected and proper middle-aged doctor, physically described as both tall and handsome. He is also extremely wealthy, having a fortune well over two million dollars in 19th century money. The doctor had a belief that within each human being there are two countering forces, good and evil, leading to his experiments that try to separate the two. This, however, was not done merely for scientific reasons, but also because he enjoyed escaping the confines of the respectable guise of Dr. Jekyll. Edward Hyde is a small, deformed, disgusting young man that is devoid of an apparent profession. Despite the many descriptions of the horror that Edward Hyde invokes it is not clear precisely why or what features are so disgusting to observers. He is often compared to animals, implying that he is not a fully evolved human being. Despite these horrific descriptions, Hyde is generally civilized in his interactions with others. Dr. Jekyll describes Hyde as "pure evil", and he menaces society at night, trampling a girl in the street and murdering Sir Danvers Carew. This is one of several double-sided toby jugs depicting opposites.
