Denis Compton, C.B.E. character jug modeled by Stanley J. Taylor and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1997 limited edition of 9,500 commissioned by Lawleys By Post. Denis Compton (1918-1997) was arguably one of the greatest English cricket batsmen playing throughout the 1940s and 50s. By the 1930s, he was a leading English batsman and remained at the top of his profession for almost three decades. As an all-rounder, Compton's dashing approach to batting and the sheer enjoyment he exuded endeared him to a generation of cricket lovers. As with many other sportsmen of his generation he lost some of his best years to the Second World War. In 1947 he thrilled a war-weary English public by breaking record after record in scoring 3,816 runs. This was the summit of a glittering career. He retired in 1957 after playing seventy-eight Test matches with seventeen centuries at an average of 50.06. A cricket bat, ball and wicket form the handle of the jug.
