David Biggs character jug prototype - Royal Doulton 1988

David Biggs character jug prototype designed by David Biggs and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in 1988. David Biggs (1936-2010) joined Royal Doulton as a tableware modeler in 1958 under the direction of Max Henk. His sketch ideas for character jugs impressed Henk so much that he was soon producing two or three models a year in addition to his other work. His first jug, the Town Crier, went into production in 1960. He then worked closely with Henk on the development of the Williamsburg collection.
David particularly enjoyed the challenge of creating interesting handles for his jugs and often provided Max Henk with great ideas. David could capture an excellent likeness when modeling famous faces such as Sir Stanley Mathews, the Stoke soccer player, which was one of his last commissions. He created a succession of best-selling designs, including several ‘Jugs of the Year’. David left a lasting legacy with more than seventy character jug, toby jug and derivative creations.
This self-portrait of Doulton’s iconic modeler is the only such model by any of the plethora of Doulton modelers through the years. Donned out in one of his typical flamboyant ensembles, David seems to be enjoying the fruits of his labor. Only one example is known of this jug. An easel with painting, palette of paints, Town Crier character jug, teapot, and artist's tools form the handle of the jug.
