Charrington Toby jug medium size produced by Wade Ceramics of Burslem, England, circa 1960. A Charrington Toby is an Ordinary Toby with a specific appearance. He features a common man of the time wearing 18th century clothing and a tricorn hat. He is holding an overflowing pitcher of ale in his left hand and a cup of ale in his right. This Charrington Toby was the logo for the Charrington Brewery which was founded in Bethnal Green, London, in the early 18th century. Hoare & Co was purchased by Charrington in 1933. The brewery then merged with United Breweries of London in 1964, and with Bass Brewery in 1967 to become the largest UK brewing company, Bass Charrington. Among its many products were Toby Ale, Toby Lager and Toby Stout. Charrington Toby jugs were produced by many potteries as advertising pieces for Charrington Brewery.
