Charrington Toby jug - James Green circa 1930

Charrington Toby jug produced by James Green & Nephew in London, England, circa 1930. A Charrington Toby is an Ordinary Toby with a specific appearance. He features a common man of the time wearing 18th century clothing and a tricorn hat. He is holding an overflowing pitcher of ale in his left hand and a cup of ale in his right. This Charrington Toby was the logo for the Charrington Brewery which was founded in Bethnal Green, London, in the early 18th century. Hoare & Co was purchased by Charrington in 1933. The brewery then merged with United Breweries of London in 1964, and with Bass Brewery in 1967 to become the largest UK brewing company, Bass Charrington. Among its many products were Toby Ale, Toby Lager and Toby Stout. Charrington Toby jugs were produced by many potteries as advertising pieces for Charrington Brewery. This Charrington Toby has "Hoare & Co's Toby Ale In Bottle" written across the base.
