Chantecler character jug - Orchies circa 1910

Chantecler majolica character jug produced by Orchies of Orchies, France, circa 1910. The Chantecler is the main character from Edmond Rostand's 1910 play of the same name. Rostand, a French poet and dramatist, wrote the four act play centered on the themes of idealism and spiritual sincerity. All of the characters are barnyard animals with Chantecler being the main protagonist. In the play's initial run Chantecler was played by French stage actor Lucien Guitry, who this jug was modeled after. The Chantecler's tail feathers form the handle of the jug. Orchies model numbers are a combination of letters and numbers. The letters are an abbreviation for the name of the jug and the number is the size of the jug.
