Chairman Mao Zedong character jug in a gray prototype colorway designed by Caroline Dadd and modeled by Robert I. Tabbenor, and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 2016 limited edition of 100 commissioned by UK International Ceramics. Mao Zedong (1893-1976) was a Han Chinese revolutionary, political theorist and communist leader. He led the People's Republic of China from its establishment in 1949 until his death in 1976. His theoretical contribution to Marxism-Leninism military strategies, and brand of Communist policies, are collectively known as Maoism. Mao is held in high regard in China as a great revolutionary, political strategist, military mastermind, and savior of the nation. Many Chinese believe that through his policies, he laid the economic, technological and cultural foundations of modern China, transforming the country from an agrarian society into a major world power. Conversely, Mao's social-political programs, such as the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, are blamed for costing millions of lives, causing severe famine and damage to the culture, society and economy of China. Mao is regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern world history, and named by "Time Magazine" as one of the 100 most important people of the twentieth century. Two Chinese peasants holding their "Little Red Book" and a flag form the handle of the jug.
