Centurion toby jug - Bairstow Manor Pottery 1998

Centurion character jug produced by Bairstow Manor Pottery of Hanley, England, in 1998. A Centurion was a position in the Roman army during classical antiquity, nominally the commander of a century which is a military unit of around 80 legionaries. In a Roman legion, centuries were grouped into cohorts and commanded by their senior-most centurion. The prestigious first cohort was led by the primus pilus, the most senior centurion in the legion. This Centurion toby jug was produced as a promotional giveaway by Mansell PLC, an English construction engineering company, to its Contractor of the Year in 1998.
