American Toby Jug Museum 

Celsius and Fahrenheit double toby jug designed by William K. Harper and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1999 limited edition of 2,500 for Lawleys by Post. This unique two-person toby jug honors two men of science whose names have become synonymous with the temperature of our environment, Anders Celsius and Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit. Anders Celsius (1701-1744), born in Uppsala, Sweden, was one of a large number of scientists originating from Ovanaker in the province of Halsingland. From his meteorological observations he constructed his world-famous Celsius thermometer in 1742, with 0 for the boiling point of water and 100 for the freezing point. After his death in 1744 the scale was reversed to its present form. Born in Danzig, Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit (1686-1736) was a German physicist and maker of scientific instruments. He is best known for making the thermometer more accurate by using mercury instead of alcohol, and for developing the Fahrenheit temperature scale in 1717. He determined 0 degrees as the freezing point of ice, salt and water, and 32 degrees the freezing point of pure water. This scale is still commonly used in the United States. This double toby jug depicts the two inventors in traditional 18th Century Staffordshire dress and incorporates a working thermometer into the jug.
