Captain Scott character jug - Royal Doulton 1998-2000

Captain Scott character jug modeled by David B. Biggs and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, between 1998-2000. Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) came from a seafaring family and is famous as the leader of the ill-fated British expedition to the South Pole . His first expedition to Antarctica in the ship Discovery took place between 1901 and 1904 and was half-funded by the British Government. Discovery was specially built for the voyage as a research ship designed to go through icy seas. In 1910 he sailed on his second scientific voyage to explore the part of Antarctica around the Ross Sea, to discover more about the animals, weather and geology of the Antarctic, and to attempt to reach the South Pole. Scott's party reached the South Pole on January 17, 1912, only to discover that Norwegian Roald Amundsen and his four companions had arrived there one month before them. Tragically, none of Scott's team made the return trip to their camp, all perishing along the way. Scott was found dead in November, 1912, in a tent along with two companions only eleven miles from the next food depot. A Union jack, snow and tent form the handle of the jug.
