Bumble toby jug tiny - Germany circa 1935

Bumble toby jug tiny size produced in Germany circa 1935. Mr. Bumble is the pompous, self-important beadle, a minor parish official who served as an usher and preserved order at services in the workhouse in Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist". This is the same house where Oliver is born. The fat, well-dressed Bumble preaches Christian morality, but behaves without compassion toward the paupers under his care, becoming the symbol of Dickens' distaste for the workhouse system. He marries Mrs. Corney and later is disgraced and becomes a resident in the same workhouse. Due to Bumble's bumbling, Oliver escapes from Mr. Bumble's care and runs away to London.
