Bulldog toby jug - Rookwood 1888

Bulldog toby jug in a Rockingham finish produced by Rookwood of Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1888. Designed by Anna Marie Valentien, this bulldog is wearing an eye patch and a collar with a lock on it. The piece was created for Cincinnati's centennial celebration in 1888. The Bulldog is a British breed of dog of mastiff type. It is a medium sized, muscular dog with large heads with thick folds of skin around the face and shoulders. While often used as a symbol of ferocity and courage, modern bulldogs are generally friendly, amiable dogs. A rope attached to his collar forms the handle of the jug. 1888 is incised on the bulldog's collar.
