Northern Ireland Football Supporter character jug prototype modeled by Stanley J. Taylor and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in 1993. Football, known as soccer in the U.S., is the unofficial national sport of England, where it has an important place within British life. Britain is the undisputed birthplace of modern football, a popular sport of the masses from the eighth century forward. Over the centuries, so violent did matches become that many attempts were made to ban the sport, including laws passed under Queen Elizabeth I to jail those who played. But no law could stop the game in Britain. In 1815 Eton College established a set of rules which other schools began to use and these became standardized as the Cambridge Rules. The Football League, established in Britain in 1888, was the first professional football league in the world. This prototype character jug celebrates Northern Ireland's national team. A scarf in Northern Ireland's national team colors forms the handle of the jug. To the authors' knowledge this is a unique, one-of-a-kind jugs.
