Robert James Lee Hawke (1929 - 2019) was an Australian politician and union organizer who was the 23rd prime minister of Australia, from 1983 to 1991, holding office as the leader of the Australian Labor Party. Previously he was the president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions from 1969 to 1980 and president of the Labor Party national executive from 1973 to 1980. Hawke holds the highest ever approval rating for an Australian prime minister, reaching 75% approval in 1984. Historians have generally praised the reforms implemented by the Hawke Government, and his government is often credited for the modernization of Australia's economy. Hawke is frequently ranked within the upper tier of Australian prime ministers.
