Blackamoor Sailor toby jug - Arcadian China circa 1920

Blackamoor Sailor crested ware toby jug produced by Arkinstall and Sons of Stoke-on-Trent, England, circa 1920 with its Arcadian China tradename. Blackamoors, or Black Moors, were black people from North Africa who worked in wealthy European's homes or other manual labor positions. This Blackamoor has joined the Royal Navy as a sailor. He bears a crest on his left side. Crested ware are small, porcelain objects in a variety of shapes and forms that bear a heraldic crest to represent the area in which they were sold as souvenirs.
