Beefeaters character jug small - Royal Doulton 1947-1953

Beefeaters small character jug modeled by Harry Fenton and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, between 1947-1953. Beefeater is the popular name for the Yeomen Warders, ceremonial guardians of Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London. They are responsible for watching over prisoners in the Tower and safeguarding the British crown jewels, but in practice they act as tour guides and are a tourist attraction in their own right. They wear red and gold uniforms, white ruffles and black hats. Yeoman Warders, formed at Henry VIII's coronation, began guarding the Tower in 1485. The handle carriers the GR Royal cipher for George Rex. The GR cipher and red underglaze paint dates this jug's production.
