Beefeater lamp base - Shorter & Son circa 1950

Beefeater lamp base jug produced by Shorter & Son of Stoke-on-Trent, England, circa 1950. Beefeater is the popular name for the Yeomen Warders, ceremonial guardians of Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London. They are responsible for watching over prisoners in the Tower and safeguarding the British crown jewels, but in practice they act as tour guides and are a tourist attraction in their own right. They wear red and gold uniforms, white ruffles and black hats. Yeoman Warders, formed at Henry VIII's coronation, began guarding the Tower in 1485. The lamp base was created by re-modeling the large toby jug, closing in the top and opening up the bottom.
