Beefeater character jug - Royal Doulton 1953-1986

Beefeater character jug modeled by Harry Fenton and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, between 1953-1986. Beefeater is the popular name for the Yeomen Warders, ceremonial guardians of Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London. They are responsible for watching over prisoners in the Tower and safeguarding the British crown jewels, but in practice they act as tour guides and are a tourist attraction in their own right. They wear red and gold uniforms, white ruffles and black hats. Yeoman Warders, formed at Henry VIII's coronation, began guarding the Tower in 1485. The handle carriers the ER Royal cipher for Elizabeth Regina. The ER cipher and underglaze red paint dates this jug's production. The Beefeater character jug was made in three sizes with this being the largest along with small (D6233) and miniature (D6251) sizes.
