Bacchus character jug produced in Staffordshire England circa 1820. Bacchus is the Roman god of wine and intoxication. Around 200 BCE the Bacchanalia annual festival was held in his honor featuring excessive drinking orgies and criminal behavior. The monkey handle on this jug makes it unusual.
