Auxiliary Fireman character jug - Royal Doulton 1991

Auxiliary Fireman character jug modeled by Stanley J. Taylor and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1991 limited edition of 9,500 celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the Local Defence Volunteers founded in May 1940. During the Second World War all able-bodied British men were conscripted into the armed forces creating a shortage of manpower on the domestic front. This gap was ably filled by those too young, too old, or deferred from service on medical grounds, or those in reserve occupations. Among them were large numbers of volunteers in the Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS). Part of the Local Defence Volunteers, these courageous Auxiliary Firemen assisted the main Fire Service in putting out the many blazes and fires caused by the incendiary bombs dropped by the German Luftwaffe on London and other cities of Great Britain. A fire hose and brass nozzle form the handle of the jug.
