Arry jug produced by Staffordshire Fine Ceramics of Tunstall, England, circa 1975. 'Arry and 'Arriet depict London cockney costermongers, itinerant street traders who usually display their wares on a barrow or cart. Costermonger is derived from one who sold large apples called costards. 'Arry is a true cockney, born within the sound of the bells of St. Mary-le-Bow in Cheapside. The archetypal cockney, 'Arry, is a street trader selling his wares in one of London's famous street markets. He is an expert in rhyming slang, so called because it substitutes the intended word or phrase with one that rhymes with it. A typical conversation between 'Arry and his old china, or mate, 'Arriet, is likely to include such colorful phrases as "trouble and strife" meaning wife, "rosy lee" for tea, and "whistle and flute," meaning suit.
