American Sailor toby jug - Pearlware John Walton circa 1820

American Sailor Toby Jug produced by John Walton circa 1820 in a Pearlware finish. Seated on a sea chest with handles on the sides the American Sailor is dressed in a blue jacket and blue striped pants. A tree branch forms the handle of the jug. The Pearlware finish refers to the final clear glazing that contained cobalt and gave a slight blue coloring to glaze that tended to pool between fingers and in the creases in the face.
