'Arriet small character jug colorway with gray hair modeled by Harry Fenton and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, circa 1947. 'Arry and 'Arriet depict London cockney costermongers, itinerant street traders who usually display their wares on a barrow or cart. Costermonger is derived from one who sold large apples called costards. 'Arriet is a true cockney, born within the sound of the bells of St. Mary-le-Bow in Cheapside. This typical Londoner wears an ostrich feather hat, the traditional headwear of Pearly Queens. She speaks in colorful cockney dialect characterized by the dropped "h," hence the pronunciation of her name, and with substitution of rhyming words when speaking. This distinctive accent was parodied in the musical "My Fair Lady", where Professor Henry Higgins attempts to teach the Queen's English to another young cockney girl, Eliza Doolittle. An ostrich feather forms the handle of the jug.
