Ugly Duchess toby jug - Staffordshire circa 1890

Ugly Duchess toby jug produced in Staffordshire circa 1890 in a majolica finish. The Ugly Duchess is best known as the antagonist of The Queen of Hearts in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. In her first appearance the Duchess seems nearly as unpleasant as the Queen herself but later on treats Alice with friendliness and respect. The Ugly Duchess is also a satirical portrait painted by the Flemish artist Quentin Matsys around 1513. The portrait is thought to be a source for John Tenniel's 1869 illustrations of the Duchess in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
