The Wizard character jug in a blue flambé finish modeled by Stanley J. Taylor and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in 1990. A wizard is a practitioner of magic who possesses or uses supernatural powers. Generally thought of as a servant of good, not evil, the wizard provides sage advice and protection to his subjects through incantations, magical spells, or magic signs that protect against adverse influence. During the fifteenth century, the term wizard, derived from the Middle English "wysard" or wise one, referred to a philosopher or sage. In most cases there is little to differentiate a wizard from similar fictional or folkloric practitioners of magic such as an enchanter or a sorcerer, but specific works use the names with narrower meanings. Famous wizards from folklore and fiction include Merlin of Arthurian legend, Prospero in Shakespeare's "The Tempest", the eponymous Wizard of Oz who turned out to be an imposter, and Albus Dumbledore from "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and its sequels. A black cat and magic wand form the handle of the jug.
