The Pilgrim Father character jug prototype modeled by David B. Biggs and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in 1969. Seeking freedom to worship as they thought proper, the Pilgrims, a band of English settlers, landed at what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts, on November 21, 1620. They had earlier fled English persecution and settled in Holland in 1608, but they longed to return to their English way of life and to keep their own kind of worship. In September, 1620, they set sail for America aboard the Mayflower, establishing the Plymouth Colony on the shore of Cape Cod Bay. Only thirty-five of the 102 passengers were of the Separatists who originally fled to Holland, but they retained control and, before landing, drew up agreements of government by the majority, called the “Mayflower Compact.” The name “Pilgrim Father” is given to those members who made the first crossing on the Mayflower.
The Mayflower, depicted as the handle of this prototype jug, unfortunately was deemed too elaborate and expensive to produce. The project was scuttled with only one known copy in existence.
